The Garage.

In the beginning, there was Turnbull:

(A vintage postcard from the 30's)

Almost everything in the garage is somehow connected to Turnbull Canyon Road.
Heck, most of Dad's life is somehow connected to TCR.
At least mostly before we came along!
- BB, BC and BD-

The guys first started with their telescopes and meteor showers.
Dad, Payton, Rob & Carl.
(Payton, Rob Carl & Hal were the photographers.)

Then Dad, Harlan sometimes Payton began racing bicycles over Turnbull.
Dad bought a used
Olmo professional racing bicycle -
used, in 1961 for $82.00 -
from someone in their
Velo International Racing Club.

They began racing over Turnbull,
then they began taking on longer and more strenuous rides, like:

to the top of Mount Wilson and back...
Crystal Lake (in the San Gabriel Mountains) and back...
down Highway 39 and old Laguna Canyon Road to Laguna Beach and back
and to San Diego and back.

I rode around on an old bike that was abandoned at UCLA.
My longest journey, lol...was downhill from Pasadena to Whittier.
Big deal, mama!

I bought a Raleigh after Dad and I got married.
We made a few rides, but then I found out I was preggers
and sold/gave it to Hal's Lorraine.

Then came their California State Driver's Licenses
when the boys moved on up to
taking their machines over the hill and back.

The routine was to race over Turnbull, and go to the
Jack in the Box
on the Hacienda Hills side.

It worked well for them, since Jack in the box was open 24 hours.
They petty much restricted their racing to weekdays, and
the dark of night, or very early morning.
so they could see headlights of approaching cars.

turnbull night run

(not the guys)

And there were a few rules.
They'd have to drive up and back one lap.
(Checking for duh fuzz.)
Then they'd wait on the Whittier side
for a sports car to be going over the hill.
The next rule:
They'd have to pass the sports car. going over the hill.
Then they could go home, until they had passed another sports car, lol.
