MY SEWING ROOM

Enter, if you dare!

I've been asked to GET OUT of the garage,
at my earliest convenience.

(Don't remind Dad, that his
little needleworker already has
a sewing ROOM in the house;
fabric stashed in every closet
handwork all over the den
a sewing maching in the sewing room
and in the den
and in closets!)

Tisk! Tisk!

Maybe we could buy a neighbors house for
all of my fabrics

and threads
and sewing tools
and patterns
and sewing machines!

Oh, and don't forget the christmas decorations
and the Easter decorations
and the 4th

Or better yet, move your racing toys and
tools and
bikes,

the Bronco, and
that FIAT!
OH MY!

This was Ashley's Prom weekend. (15.May2004)

I was pretty honored when she asked me to sew her gown.
Best part was, she let me in on the design efforts.
I'm not all that big on sewing on demand, so that made it fun for me too.
She was afraid the pattern wasn't going to turn out the way she liked, I
told her to just 'trusssst in me', and in the end, she
seemed genuinely pleased.

Prom DAY was pretty stressful for Ashley.
She had to get nails,
make-up,
hair done....and
a bra for a low-cut, backless gown.

The $60 Victoria's secret 'jelly-bra' did not work.
Aunt Lori's backless bra didn't plunge enough in the front.
Necessity often becomes the Mother of Invention.

Ashley did what so many girls resort to:

Cross Stitching

The oldest existing embroidery dates from the 5th century BC, from Athens, Greece. The stitches are long gone, experts agree that the technique was counted cross stitch. Since 500 BC, cross stitch has been an important stitch. Each stitch is perfect, as it is the same size as the previous stitch, on an evenweave fabric, and, the fabric is an empty canvas, to fill as any artist's paint might.

It's very easy for children as well. stitchers need not fill in the background. It's easy to make random patterns from everyday items. Alphabets, animals, houses, trees, food, etc. Renaissance England produced cloth, threads, dyes, local flora, fauna and customs. Fourteenth and fifteenth century linens were a part of wealthy homes. Ladies' education included all kinds of needlework to decorate clothing and home decor.

The 17th century brought on simple samplers and (long stitched things, lol. The pieces improved as the seamstress worked on their needlework. Landscapes and houses were popular in colonial America's samplers. The usual picture designs were prevelant, along with Bible verses, moral mottos, and of course, the artist's name and age, if she was a girl, and often family names.
I have so very little of any of my needlework, myself.

Almost all of it has been made for others.

SEWING HINTS

Sewing Machines:

Skipped stitches
-Change the needle.

Knotting or breaking thread/Changing the needle too often.
-Be sure to not force the fabric through the feed-dog. (bent needles)

Use quality threads only.

Try completely re-thread your machine.
Always thread machine with the presser foot up.

Make sure the bobbin and bobbin case are correctly threaded.
-Be sure the bobbin is going in the right direction.
-Watch for bobbin wear, especially with plastic bobbins:
--Specifically for wear and tear
--SIZE matters in bobbin/bobbin case world.
---If your bobbin is "wobbling" in the case, you'll have tension problems.

Tension Adjustments
-The rule of thumb for tension adjustment is: "righty tighty, lefty lucy".
--Turn them to the right you tighten the spring
--Turn them to the left you are loosening the spring.

Maintenance
--You'll shorten the life of your sewing machine w/out regular maintainence.
